Private Label vs. White Label: Which Is Right for Your Supplement Brand?

supplement white labeling

Every supplement brand founder eventually hits the same fork in the road: build something entirely your own, or move faster with a formula that already exists. The terms "private label," "white label," and "custom formulation" get used interchangeably online, but they represent very different levels of investment, timeline, and control — and it's one of the most common questions we field at Basic Health Brands from prospective brand partners.

White label: the fastest path to market

White label means taking an existing, already-formulated product and simply applying your branding to the packaging. It's the quickest and lowest-cost way to get a product on shelves or online, since the formula, testing, and manufacturing process are already established.[1] The tradeoff is exclusivity — the same base formula may be sold under multiple brand names.

Private label: your brand, a shared foundation

Private label sits a step further along the spectrum. You're typically working from a manufacturer's existing product library, but with more room to adjust dosing, flavoring, or packaging to differentiate your version. It's a middle ground: faster than starting from scratch, but with more brand identity than a pure white-label product.

Custom formulation: built from the ground up

Custom formulation means your product is developed specifically for your brand — ingredient selection, dosage, and claims are built around your goals from day one. This route takes the longest and requires the most upfront collaboration with a manufacturer's R&D team, but it produces a truly proprietary product competitors can't simply order off a shelf.[2]

How to decide

The right choice usually comes down to three questions: how quickly you need to launch, how much differentiation your brand strategy requires, and what budget you have for R&D and minimum order quantities. A brand testing a new market may start white label to validate demand, then move to private label or custom formulation once it has traction.

How Basic Health Brands supports all three paths

Since 1962, our team has manufactured private label products for well-known names in the vitamin and supplement space, and our in-house R&D, packaging, and label design teams work across cGMP-certified, FDA-registered facilities.[3] Whether you need a fast white-label solution, a private label product with your own branding, or a fully custom formulation, we manage the process from concept through climate-controlled warehousing and EDI-compatible distribution.

Not ready to formulate yet?

If you're a retailer rather than a brand builder, you don't need to go through this process at all - our finished, ready-to-sell product catalog, including products like Omax3® and Flomentum®, is available now through our wholesale portal.
